What is a pendrive? How does it work? Tricks and tips

This small device called pendrive is already mandatory in the pocket of many, and some even have a difficult life without it, because it is a practical accessory, easy to use and  compatible with all operating systems on the market, including Windows, Mac and Linux.

In a storage device of this type we can transport all kinds of files, and only limit us the storage capacity that the pendrive has. Such is the flexibility offered by the pendrive that many even use it to load and boot an operating system from them.

For all these reasons, in this post we will know a little more about the characteristics and advantages of the pendrive , with which we will be able to use it to the maximum of its possibilities.

Technically,  the pendrive is a portable storage device, consisting of a flash memory, accessible through a USB port. Its capacity varies according to the model, and at present we can find in the market pendrives with a capacity of up to 256 Gb in a minimum space, compared to those old 44 MB hard disks with which equipped the first PCs, it is of a true evolution in data storage technology.
Storage capacity and pendrive format
Being small and having a great capacity, it already marked the death of the old and nostalgic 3.5-inch diskettes. The CDS tried to replace the floppy disks,  but its portability and practicality is less than that of the pendrive. Today there is no portable medium so fast for recording and reading data , as is a pendrive, which made it popular very quickly.

It is believed that the term pendrive may have been granted because the first portable device with flash memory has been similar to a pen (“pen” in English). Another possibility is that this accessory is so small that it can be considered even more practical to load than a common pencil.

hanks to the small size of the internal electronics of the pendrive, manufacturers of this type of device can include a flash drive in almost any housing,  being able to find them in all kinds of formats, even the most unthinkable .

How to take care of a Pendrive. Care to avoid problems with a pendrive

Choice of device: for a serious use, a pendrive in earnest: There are about a dozen renowned manufacturers of pendrives, which apply a true quality control and respond for their products, even offering support via the web. On the other hand, there are many more, less known, whose care in the production process are unknown.

Currently, the pendrives are already offered as business gifts, with the logo of recorded companies. If you want to save important information in your pendrive, choose a model dedicated only to store data, from a consolidated manufacturer in the market. Whoever uses less reliable equipment must be prepared to pay the consequences of their choice.
Care when connecting a pendrive, it is fragile: A flash memory can be used for 5 years or more. The average life of a pendrive is greater than that of a conventional hard drive. However, the memory chip is mounted on a printed circuit, to which the 4 contacts of the USB connector, attached to the external body, usually plastic, are soldered. The printed circuit is fragile and the fixation of the connector on the body is not as rigid as it seems. There is the problem.

No matter how accessible your PC’s USB port is, no matter how good your hand is, no matter how firm your hand,  plugging and unplugging from day to day inevitably causes material fatigue , cutting a circuit or compromising internal contacts .

As none of this can be avoided, the way is to try to extend the useful life of the pendrive. A good solution is to connect the pendrive to the computer by means of a USB cable “male / female”, easy to find and very cheap.  The connection of the pendrive to the cable is easier and subject the device to less effort . In addition to this, the pendrive is not fixed to the computer, predisposed to physical breakage by bumping or hitting, which happens more frequently than many imagine.

When we connect the pendrive, it is best to leave it quiet: The USB ports on the computer allow high speed data transfer. On the other hand, the internal connections of the computer, through which the bitstream passes, are welded or depend on very just inserts, with the additional security of fixing screws.
Despite the friendly appearance of USB connections, we should not treat them with the same carelessness with which we use an electrical outlet, or an audio plug. A movement, however minor, on the contact surface during a transfer may damage the files contained in the pendrive.

Therefore,  once the pendrive is connected to the USB and when the icon has appeared in the taskbar, confirming the recognition of the device, the most advisable thing is not to move it.
The best advantage of the pendrive is the transport of data:  The pendrive works like a hard disk. This is why we may end up using it as such, working directly with the files stored on the pendrive. Maybe we are doing this, ignoring the risk to which it is exposed. Our luck could one day end and, when we least expect it, our files will have been corrupted.

How to disconnect the pendrive with security: The pendrive, like any device with USB connection, has the characteristic of being “hot-swappable”, that is, it can be connected or disconnected with the connected computer, without risk of damaging the hardware, be it the port on which it is connected or the device itself.
The stored data can be damaged if the pendrive is removed during read or write operations. So that this does not happen, before extracting a pendrive, the removable unit must be stopped to perform a safe extraction.
Be careful when handling a pendrive, it is fragile: Although the pendrives can be placed in key chains or hung on the neck, there are safer places to transport them. Inside the pocket or a folder the pendrive will be more protected against goals, falls and contact with water.
Always make a backup of the pendrive: The capacity of the pendrives, even the largest, is much lower than that of the hard drives available in current computers. Therefore, it will always be possible to create a directory on the hard drive, intended to store the backup of the entire pendrive or, at least, the most important files it contains.

If we follow these simple tips we can take advantage of all the advantages that a pendrive can offer us , and also use it throughout its useful life to the maximum of its possibilities without performance problems.
